Cascadia Earthquake, or NWC art + science!

Cool article about earthquakes in the pacific NW and indigenous peoples. Tim Paul, who did the second print in the article, did another one about earthquakes that I own. It's also sweet.

Nikon PB-4 Bellows

Got it on ebay. I really want the 85mm PC, but this is a starting point to make sure I like the movements. Basically these allow you to tilt the lens up/down or swing it left/right, or shift it up/down/left/right. What these movements do is change the focus plane, so you can either get alot more or alot less in focus. It works cause the lens itself is larger than a normal 35mm lens and you only access part of the glass. Anyway, some images:
the standard thing to do is shoot it normal, then tilted down and up to show differences, so here's the standard comparison...

Tilted right, neutral, then tilted left. One thing about the PB-4 is it doesn't have a scale on it so you can't tell how far you're tilting/swinging. In this case it seems like I swung it more than in the first set cause the band of focus is really narrow in the 3rd image.

 some nice one off shots

 Tilted up, tilted down, neutral

nice one off again
D600 with PB-4 tilted down with Bellows 105mm. The bellows are largely compressed and the focusing rail is behind the camera/lens

Books

I saw this image upside down (yoga) and thought it looked cool -- I like it that most books you can't see the title of, but some are shaped funny, so they fit in the stack with the spine pointing out. Focus could be a little better (low morning light) but the nuggets include: "the Book of Yogurt," "Northwest Coast Indian Painting," and "the California Surf Project." Pretty representative of my interests, eh? and I didn't manipulate the scene at all. The sweet red/black print is Thunderbird by Robert Davidson, a pretty rare print -- was super stoked when I got it off of ebay.

Mike Dangeli, Nisga'a Artist

I'm getting a bunch of prints in the mail soon from Pacific Editions. One of them is by an artist named Mike Dangeli. I like the look of his work, so googled him, and found this great article.
Another, by the same blogger

Most of the drums on AlaskaNativeArtists are by him. He has quite a bit of work on that site, actually. The paintings are great.

NWC Art & the Olympics

Got an email from Black Tusk Gallery just now, about how a canadian skeleton racer who won gold did it wearing a helmet designed by a NWC artist. Cool.

Why My Shades Are Usually Drawn:

This print is by Ron Hamilton, who goes by the name Hupquatchew when he signs prints. 1972.
mint condition at a museum
not mint condition, on ebay, paper massively deteriorated, probably due to light exposure. UV kills.

Man, looking at this print makes me sad. It's only ~40 years old. This is probably from back before they used acid-free paper.

Update: I emailed the print maker, who owns Pacific Editions Limited in Victoria BC, and he thinks the print has been damaged by "fungal foxing" -- caused by storing it in a wet, unheated locale. Light is bad, but usually leads to an even color discoloration.

While I'm at it. Maltwood gallery page for Ron Hamilton, Tim Paul, Frank Charlie, Patrick Amos, Joe David, Art Thompson, Bill Reid, Roy Henry Vickers, i could go on.... and will at some point

New Prints

Got 2 Art Thompson prints from '74 in the mail yesterday. The early 70s were pretty much the beginning of northwest coast (NWC) print making. I really like the simplicity of the moon image. The sea urchin one is crazy, a fairly unusual animal to represent.
