Sand, everywhere

Today was a funny day. There was an interesting story on NPR this morning about a band who toured the west coast using bicycles. Just a ton of soul and greenness and good times. Then I saw that the Daily Nexus had an article about this floatopia thing that happened on saturday. My neighbor told me about it thursday night, that the kids had used myface et al. to organize a thing so that the oppressed, spoiled rich kids who go to school here could float on the ocean using cheap made in China rafts and get drunk in peace. Well there were basically ambulances going by my house all day on saturday, plus 13 arrests. Turns out 12,000 drunk kids on the beach, high tide, waves, and 55 degree water do not a good combination make. So that was pretty much the antithesis of soul, greenness, and good timesListened/read to that stuff before sunrise. Went surfing at first light. Tide was high and rising, so it was pretty messed up, lots of body whomping, getting sand blasted into every orifice. Got one amazing wave: started out nice and blue, then, as you point right in to the rising sun when you go right in the winter, the barrel became this crazy orange color, then as I got deeper in the barrel it got real dark, until I got pinched. I don't usually tube ride as well on rights as I do on lefts, but that one I was really happy with. Anyway, got out, and dumped half of the sand on the beach down my shower drain. Was still picking sand out of my ears this afternoon. Had a bit of the old nas-o-drain, too. A nice morning. It rained in the afternoon, and I collected a bunch of rainwater again-- had about 8 buckets set out today.

IV is weird. I love having the beach right here, the co-op. Could really do without the kids. But at least their partying and stuff means I'm always surfing alone, while they are still sleeping it off. Kids these days....

  1. This was a great post. Although I am still a bit confused about how exactly YourFace was used to organize this flotilla business, what with YourFace being all busy submitting YourManuscript.
p.s. MuddyWaters event May 4th is attendance required.
